Article – Sherry’s Adopted Father, Danny Thomas

Sherry’s adopted father, Danny Thomas

Thomas played Danny Williams, a successful comedian and nightclub entertainer. Jean Hagen played his serious and loving wife Margaret, Sherry Jackson their daughter Terry, and Rusty Hamer their son Rusty. The show’s premise dealt with Danny rarely having time to spend with his family and Margaret dealing with the children on her own. Margaret often felt neglected by her husband and on several occasions felt like leaving him. Margaret was a society woman and strict with the children but loved her family. Louise Beavers made several appearances during this era as the Williams’ maid, Louise Evans, and often found herself at odds with Danny and sided with Margaret in most fights between the couple. Nana Bryant appeared often as Margaret’s kind mother, who Danny and the children were fond of; but Margaret, who had been raised by her aunt and uncle because of her mother being away on stage tours often, was not as warm towards her mother. Bryant died in late 1955 and her character simply stopped appearing. During 1955, Louise Beavers became ill and Amanda Randolph took over the role of Louise.

Sherry Jackson is possibly the most wonderful girl I ever met. Talented. Compassionate. Loving. Kind. Giving. An actress of unrealized potential. Her family: Mothre Rita, brothers Curtis, Gary and little Robert Jon and of course her stepdad Montey Pitman cast an enormous shadow on my life and my career. They were like a surrogate family to me and gave me direction. We have lost touch over the years, but think of them every day. It was great growing up in Hollywood in those days and the Pitman/Jackson family gave it al a very special meaning. Hope all is well. I love and miss you guys. Hope to talk to you soon. God bless.

I am so glad I found this site. In 2007 I was laid up recovering from my 11th surgery. due to my Cerebral Palsy. During this time, I came across Make Room for Daddy on DVD (Blockbuster). I fell in love with the show and this wonderful family and began a quest to find/watch as many episodes that I could get my hands on. I have been able to find a few that I am so happy that I own now. I only wish more would be released. In my opinion the world is being deprived by not being able to see (enjoy) MRFD. Thanks so much for sharing this article. I loved the part where it talks about You/Terry being pretty much one in the same. When I would watch the scenes with you. I always thought “I bet that is how Sherry Jackson really is”. I actually have a few MRFD episodes on my iPhone (one being “Terry’s Crush”) so I can watch whenever I have a liking to. Having it available to watch when I am sitting in doctors offices is a great way to pass the long time waiting. Every year on February 15th,,,I think of you and Rusty and would wish you Happy Birthday. In my quest of searching for the show. I was even able to find some pictures of the cast that I have had hanging up in my room since 2007. My only sad part when I look at them is that I have never been able to meet this wonderful cast and get my pictures autographed.
Thanks again so much for this site and this article. I hope this finds you doing well. You have a fan in me.

PS “Trouble Along the Way “is one of my favorite movies. I also own it.

    Best always…..Serena
